IR Newport (IRN) is a key Wafer-fab manufacturing centre of International Rectifier Ltd, a global Power Management Semiconductor Company. IR provides enabling technologies for products that work smarter, cooler and raise the world's productivity per watt. IR technology is powering the next generation of computers, servers, cars, satellites and domestic appliances. The Power management products, which IR designs and manufactures, enables the conversion of crude electrical power into refined, application specific supply.

Founded in 1947, IR is the oldest semiconductor manufacturer in the world with its global headquarters in EL Selgundo, LA. IR employs over 5,000 people, with major design and manufacturing centres in the US, Mexico, China, SE Asia, mainland Europe, England and Wales.

IRN was established in March 2002. This facility has over 7,000m2 of clean-room space in two wafer-fabs.The site has seen an investment of $300m over the last six years and represents one of Wales' most advanced manufacturing environments. IRN focuses on the development and manufacturer of Low Power Discrete and Power-IC Devices.

Systems Integration & Policy Deployment The IR Newport site is the first wafer-fab in the UK to achieve conformance to the new automotive standard TS16949: 2002, second edition. The TS and ISO9000: 2000 approach is fully integrated into the Management System and the Policy Deployment process. Topics Covered

Continuous Improvement The Semiconductor Industry is one of the world's most demanding industries. Continuous Improvement has to be totally integrated into the everyday activities of IRN. This process is deployed via Customer Focus, Management Commitment, Employee Empowerment and Fact Base Decision Making. The utilisation of such tools and techniques as SPC, FMEA, 8D, APQP and Error Proofing are all employed. The goal of the IRN Quality System is to promote continual improvement; emphasising defect prevention, and the reduction of variation and waste in the supply chain, enabling IR to meet and exceed its customer's expectations.
Supplier Management In such a capitalintensive industry strong partnerships with our suppliers are critical. This process is encouraged and managed via the use of scorecards, supplier days and awards.
